If you haven’t seen it before you really owe it to yourself to check out the Wedge in Newport Beach. The last time I went out was 2005 on a very modest day. I no longer feel comfortable familiarity with the spot as I did in my younger years. At this point in my life I’d rather be a spectator than a victim.
The wedge is located at the mouth of Newport Bay along the north side of a jetty. The swells role in bouncing off the jetty creating a wedge. When its on the wedge can produce triple overhead surf in 12 inches of water. That’s what makes it dangerous.
The locals there are not very welcoming. Not for territorial reasons but because its a dangerous spot to be and too many first timers have left with broken appendages if they were lucky, paralyzed if they weren’t.
